Re: weak ephemeral Diffie-Hellman public key in vCenter Support Assistant 6.0.0.0 Build 2632669

I would love to see a reply from support, but I think the only option is to wait for an update to the appliance.  I did a little research and it looks like a problem with the version of OpenSSL which shipped with SLES 11.  OpenSSL v0.9.8 doesn't support TLS 1.1 or 1.2 (TLS 1.2 - SUSE Blog | SUSE Communities) and there is no simple mechanism for updating the version within the appliance. It doesn't really matter what kind of cert you put on the system, it will always support weaker encryption methods which cause Chrome to flag the site.  I tried limiting the ciphers list to only ECDHE, but Chrome still didn't like it.

Confirmed - the weight of the sixth 64-bit Win7 guest causes the issue.

I have rebuilt six Win7 Pro 32-bit guests, 100g preallocated disks with 4G ram, and all are running full court press with barely a perceptible lag anywhere.

I'm still going to go purchase the license for the Workstation Pro v12 product, it comes with alot of good enhancements that are well worth the price.

I forgot to mention in my previous posts that Ulli was the one who recognized that the folder containing my vm's was ntfs compressed and was the reason why the vdiskmanager repair was not working.  I had to run chkdsk to resolve some disk problems and then I was able to decompress the files and run the repair.  The only thing I had to do after that was remove the lock files.  Still planning on running split to make it easier to backup the vm's.

Well I will soon have a method on the way that will show how to create config elements, and I don't think they need to be viewed as strictly constants. We have (quite successfully) leveraged "pre-created" config elements as variables. For example, I have element attributes that hold all resource actions for an entitlement which is then bound to a workflow that builds an entitlement (making it constant), but then I present an ASD form to be able to read and "update" the element from outside vRO (making it variable). The element when used in workflow execution IS a static constant, but it WAS also variable out of band from the execution. Configuration Element attribute values are also variable without automation to do so... they are just modified manually, with ready access to vRO.

A DNS record is a constant while it lives. And it is variable when you want to update it. The way I see it, configuration elements may be quite useful (and simple) to hold these values as long as we can workout a lifecycle for the Element.

So the question becomes, why hasn't VMware provided CRUD operations for these elements outside of the REST API?  If they had, we could find other creative methods to leverage the product beyond the notion of preconceived semantics.

  • We built them for X, so you can only use them for X
    • Well can I try to use them for Y?
  • NO.
    • Why not?
  • Well we can't support that.
    • I understand, but if it works... I will let you know.

If you really think about it, what is the fear/risk? Performance? Data size? Corruption? Is that above and beyond the risk we already maintain? Risks often remedied by more compute, storage and DB backups. I threw 1million attributes in a configuration element, and it didn't even phase vRO.

Tom O'Rourke's team already have mechanisms to create Configuration Elements. Even though you are looking into the dynamic types route (which is a fine route), I want to see if I can understand if Configuration Elements as vRA inventory bring us any value. If you don't mind, I would just follow up here in your thread?

May I ask where can I get your vSphere Performance Reporting with PowerCLI: Automating vSphere Performance Reports book? Its not available anywhere.

Yes.

With the locked.properties configured to use only TLSv1.1, it works fine.  When I configure the locked.properties to use only TLSv1.2, I get an SSL error.

There's an old KB on this issue.  6.2 is not listed, but that doesn't always matter, as the KB hasn't been updated since 2014.

Hi Sudhir,

Have you completed the update to the best practice guide. If so could you please provide a link?

Re: VDP Change IP Address

$

I've been working on this and the answer is "not easily".

I changed the IP address of a V6.1.0 VDP appliance through the configuration web portal (yes you can access that from the setting icon on the top right) and it does change the IP address of the overall appliance, but leaves some other important settings unchanged, so that certain aspects of the tomcat service fail.

The overall VDP appliance will load, then get stuck with some error messages-- after a very long timeout (more than 40 minutes) it will proceed, but you can no longer manage the server.  The web portal will connect, but won't get data from the "proxy" and you can't manage the services or see anything.  Not sure if this was fixed in the 6.1.1 update.

You can still ping the VDP appliance at the new IP address and use putty to log into it.  I would guess that someone very savvy with SUSE Linux could fix things through a putty login to the VDP appliance, but I've not seen instructions on this.

Easy fix for this:

Roles > select the Role in question > Edit  > expand Datastore > select Browse Datastore

Have the user refresh and Power On the VM.

Tried it on my 7.0.0 appliance; seems to work fine.

What is the type of the input parameter? Are you sure you have actions with return type suitable for predefined list of elements of this input type?

What happens if you mouse click into Field edit box and press Enter, or type/remove some characters?

Also, could you check if there is something in log files? Maybe some error is thrown during actions list retrieval (not very likely, but still...)

vCenter 6 PSC clarification

Hi Guys.

I am planning our vCenter upgrade from 5.1 / 5.5 and would like a little clarification. I am going to out line what i am trying to achieve.

Assumptions

1) Single AD Domain

2) Single SSO

3) vCenter1 = Infrastructure Servers - vCenter2 = VDI Desktops

4) 2 x PSC servers per site

5) All sites connected via reliable MPLS circuits.

SiteA

PSC1 - PSC2

-Citrix VPX NetScaler

vCenter1

vCenter2

SiteA

PSC1 - PSC2

-Citrix VPX NetScaler

vCenter1

vCenter2

SiteA

PSC1 - PSC2

-Citrix VPX NetScaler

vCenter1

vCenter2

SiteA

PSC1 - PSC2

-Citrix VPX NetScaler

vCenter1

vCenter2

I wish to use enhanced linked mode. Am i right in thinking that with the above configuration that i have used my maximum of 8 PSC servers per SSO domain?

Can processes be configured to run after log out?

$

We just Purchased a MAC Mini that we are replacing our Windows server machines with. We are running the most current El Capitan and Apple server for file services and intend to expand that further. The current issue is that we have installed Vmware Fusion 8 Pro and have installed Virtual servers running Windows server 2008R2. We can not log out of the Admin account on the Mini without the Vmware shutting down. This requires us to leave the admin logged in all the time which is not optimum from a security stand point.

Can the system be configured to Run Vmware Virtual servers after log out?

Your comments and advice would be very welcome.

  • 'C:\cygwin\bin\perl' is missing.

Can you verify that you have perl installed at that location?

  • Could not resolve the requested VC server.

Can you check to make sure that the VC servername VC01 is resolvable by the primeclient?  You might need to add this to the hosts file.

  • You have Powercli 6 installed

The highest supported Powercli version is 5.8 and Powershell 2.0.  You will need to downgrade these items.

VCP5-DCV Renewal Question

My VCP5-DCV expires later this year and I am trying to decide what "path" to take.  I know I can take the VCP6 delta exam.  But was curious to know...if I were to take and pass the VCP6-DTM exam, would that renew my VCP5-DCV to where I would have the VCP6-DTM and the VCP5-DCV?  Or would it replace the VCP5-DCV certification?

Thank you for the assistance.

NTFS took a little while to rebuild file mapping but after a reboot was able to pull off my vs project files.  I'm still unable to backup the vm.  I believe due to it size.  so I tried to split the vm but received the following error message.  Is the best course of action to create a new vm from scratch?

Re: Disabling EP ops alerts through custom policy

So I was able to find the use the "Add settings for new set of objects" in Analysis Settings. In there I was able to add the epops adapter overrides. I've actually found areas where my override rules aren't taking affect on custom policies I've created. I also went into Alert definitions and locally disabled the rule that was firing. I'm still not having any luck having the custom policy enforce the override.

How to Increase Disk Space for /tmp in Virtual Machine ?

$

Folks,

Hello. I am using VM Player 3. My host machine is Windows 7 and VM is Oracle Linux 5. I used to copy files from Host machine to VM successfully. But now, when I copy a file from Host machine to VM, the error message comes up:

" Cannot write file to Virtual Machine.Aborting the file copy operation."

For being able to copy the file into virtual machine, it needs about 2GB of free disk space for /tmp folder.

I have run the cammand:

$df -h /tmp

Its output:

File System: /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00

Size: 95G

Used: 90G

Avail: 48M

Use%: 100%

Mounted On: /

As you see, there is only 48M disk space available after I cleaned all files in the directory /tmp that is now empty.

My question is:

How to increase disk space for "Avail:48M" in /tmp directory so that can copy file from Host to VM ?

Thanks in advance.
